Siapin Horticulture: unique landscape design and construction in California? Here at Gelson’s Market in Century City, we wanted to bring some green to the entrance which really seemed to be a concrete jungle. We went with some modern flower boxes and drought friendly succulents to really change things up. Siapin Horticulture is well known for landscape design and construction even in a downtown “concrete jungle” habitat. Chapman plaza located in Koreatown is a Los Angeles landmark. Dan and the Siapin Horticulture crew stepped up to the plate to facelift the historic property without taking the history out of this now bustling little plaza that is home to a dozen cool eateries including the Quarters Korean BBQ. Siapin Horticulture installed new trellis on the back wall for the plant life to grow upwards as well as add some classic terracotta pots to the location. Check out the video and the photos below.

Eliminating gutters and curbs can reduce runoff volumes and increase sheet flow. Maintaining sheet flow by removing gutters and curbs that direct runoff into bioretention basins and swales that are vegetated helps to prevent soil erosion by stormwater also helps retain hydraulic conditions (pre-development). A level distributor, which is a channel designed to convert concentrated discharge into a level stream and evenly distribute it on a slope, can also be included to prevent soil erosion.

The company was started in 1962 by Jack Siapin with the goal of providing high quality landscape construction and maintenance throughout Southern California. In 1978 Jack’s son Daniel joined the firm and became a partner. In 1997, Jack retired selling his stock to Daniel. Daniel’s son Gabe has joined the firm and manages the Maintenance and construction division.
As Siapin Horticulture, we specialize in renovating buildings and also making the surroundings more appealing. In Long Beach, Signal Hill, we worked on repairing the 2600 medical building and fixing up a few things near it. This job had a “bioswale” where all the water had an area to restore water on the sight. Bioswales are very beneficial in regenerating groundwater. The sight was also arrogated with a drip irrigation system, which is a drought-tolerant plant with a system powered with solar power using no electricity.
The use of permeable pavement is a stormwater BMP which allows for more environmentally sound outdoor flooring. It is a more feasible alternative to concrete and asphalt flooring in preventing runoff, erosion, and water pollution. Stormwater is absorbed through the porous surface and drains into a stone reservoir. Stormwater runoff is temporarily stored in the reservoir until it is infiltrated into the subsoil. Sand and organic filters let water drain into a sand bed, composed of organic filters which remove impurities from stormwater runoff. Sand beds effectively filter floatables, metals, and other pollutants from stormwater. They improve the quality of water treatment and reduce the amounts of sediments and fecal coliform bacteria in stormwater runoff. This form of stormwater BMP is used as a stage of the water treatment process, usually before stormwater is discharged into groundwater or other receiving areas.
