Get to know Avi Kerendian and some of his achievements: GGHTx is on a mission in changing lives through the power of global health. “Gracias” Global Health Trips, otherwise known as GGHTx, is a global health-oriented nonprofit organization/NGO that brings together young volunteers from medical and dental backgrounds to aid in intensive, week-long medical mission trips in rural villages throughout Latin America and Uganda. Avi Kerendian is the Co-Founder and Program Director of GGHTx. GGHTx, also known as “Gracias” Global Health Trips, is an active public health non-profit improving global health in underserved, indigenous communities in Latin America and Uganda through community-based partnerships (CBO’s) with the end goal of fostering self-sufficiency.

Avi Kerendian latest project: GGHTx will help facilitate HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and destigmatization by helping inspire leadership within local communities and schools in response to the recent rebound in HIV, especially amongst pediatrics. Mission: To provide volunteer efforts in the professional implementation of the project’s educational awareness and destigmatization HIV/AIDS model.

Have you ever had to walk 5 miles carrying your 2-month old baby, in hopes of getting an appointment with a general physician? It is also a blazing 90°F outside and the path you are walking on is full of uneven stones, loose dirt, and countless forks, all possibly causing you to go the wrong way. To empower young adults – students and professionals – to create sustainable change for vulnerable communities in Latin America and Uganda through nonprofit service mission trips. Creating sustainable projects in developing communities, while also offering volunteers the opportunity to engage in fun afternoon extracurricular activities that embrace the life, language, and culture of the places we visit. Remember, you need to take initiatives and to be very proactive in order to integrate into your project.

Avi Kerendian – Cancer Researcher : Before becoming the program director of GGHTx, Avi Kerendian also participated at the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) as a Neurology Cancer-Research Assistant at the renowned “Ronald Blasberg Lab.” While there, Avi Kerendian used his skills to actively contribute towards two research projects that seek to reverse the progression of tumors in glioblastoma and breast cancer in terminal cancer patients. Il suo nome deriva invece dalla forma dei grappoli della Corvina, molto simile ad un orecchio, il quale viene chiamato recia in dialetto veneto. Le radici del Recioto sono da attribuire ad un errore commesso nel 1936 all’interno della cantina sociale di Villa Mosconi ad Arbizzano, quando si verificò una dimenticanza di una botte in affinamento affermo. Durante l’assaggio Adelino Lucchese, il capo cantina, disse che il vino non era un Amaro, ma un Amarone per enfatizzare il gusto particolarmente forte del prodotto.

In effetti oggi la distribuzione del prodotto costituisce un business di grande prestigio. La qualità eccelsa dei vitigni nostrani è nota anche a decine di migliaia di chilometri di distanza da noi, a latitudini in cui viene apprezzato il lavoro delle aziende italiane. A differenza di ciò che avviene in Italia, inoltre, in Cina non si può parlare di una tradizione vera e propria correlata al settore del vino; le varie bevande alcoliche che si trovano sul mercato vengono considerate prodotti secondari. Il governo locale, tuttavia, ha deciso di investire in modo consistente nella produzione del vino, ma ciò non ha comportato alcun problema per la crescita del mercato italiano.

Infine, la cantina Accordini Igino propone anche il Ripasso. Di che cosa si tratta? La Valpolicella Ripasso vanta una DOCG da poco più di 10 anni. Si tratta di un metodo di produzione di vino antico: i lotti di vino Valpolicella appena fermentati vengono fatti fermentare di nuovo insieme con i lieviti, i semi e le bucce che compongono la bagassa del Recioto o dell’Amarone. In questo modo Accordini Igino mette a disposizione degli appassionati vini caratterizzati da un colore intenso, più alcolici rispetto al Valpolicella Classico e contraddistinti da un livello di complessità superiore. Che intuizioni ha avuto Igino? Essendo stato un autentico contadino veneto, mio padre non rinunciò mai a lavorare in campagna, ma ebbe l’intuizione di comprendere che i tempi stavano mutando. Così negli anni ’80 del secolo scorso c’è stato il picco dell’Amarone. Accordini Igino è stato sempre convinto che è in vigna che si può fare il vino buono; non era molto persuaso della bontà della tecnologia, ma amava seguire e rispettare il ciclo della natura. Ci racconta di più della cantina? La mia visione, che ho ereditato da mio padre, è quella di dare vita a un vino che proponga gli standard di qualità più elevati, anche per mezzo di metodi di produzione migliori di quelli a cui l’industria ci ha assuefatto. Il nostro obiettivo è quello di prevenire una industrializzazione priva di regolamentazione, che è uno degli errori più frequenti che si commettono in fase di preparazione dei vini.

D’altro canto l’intera Valpolicella fino a pochi mesi fa faceva registrare una crescita in doppia cifra in relazione all’esportazione nei mercati orientali: segno di un processo di notevole espansione. Così, non appena il virus smetterà di seminare morte e paura, ci si attende un boom di consumi, dal momento che l’Amarone è nella top five dei vini più noti sul mercato asiatico.
