Meet Avi Kerendian and some of his ideas

Get to know Avi Kerendian and some of his achievements: GGHTx is on a mission in changing lives through the power of global health. “Gracias” Global Health Trips, otherwise known as GGHTx, is a global health-oriented nonprofit organization/NGO that brings together young volunteers from medical and dental backgrounds to aid in intensive, week-long medical mission trips in rural villages throughout Latin America and Uganda. Avi Kerendian is the Co-Founder and Program Director of GGHTx. GGHTx, also known as “Gracias” Global Health Trips, is an active public health non-profit improving global health in underserved, indigenous communities in Latin America and Uganda through community-based partnerships (CBO’s) with the end goal of fostering self-sufficiency.

Avi Kerendian latest project: GGHTx will help facilitate HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and destigmatization by helping inspire leadership within local communities and schools in response to the recent rebound in HIV, especially amongst pediatrics. Mission: To provide volunteer efforts in the professional implementation of the project’s educational awareness and destigmatization HIV/AIDS model.

Avi Kerendian – Cancer Researcher : Before becoming the program director of GGHTx, Avi Kerendian also participated at the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) as a Neurology Cancer-Research Assistant at the renowned “Ronald Blasberg Lab.” While there, Avi Kerendian used his skills to actively contribute towards two research projects that seek to reverse the progression of tumors in glioblastoma and breast cancer in terminal cancer patients. In 2013, Glyne Harris was made the Executor of a £1.2 million estate. Harris filed the Inheritance Tax Return and paid the initial Inheritance Tax that was due. As a large part of the estate was property, it was possible to pay the Inheritance Tax on the property in instalments. Harris made the mistake of paying the estate out to a beneficiary on the understanding that the beneficiary would settle the remaining IHT bill. Unfortunately for Harris, the beneficiary swiftly disappeared to Barbados without paying the remaining Inheritance Tax. Harris as the Executor was liable to pay the remainder of the £340,000 tax bill personally. Without the estate funds at his disposal, Harris appealed saying that he should not be liable, however a judge ruled that he is in fact personally liable. HMRC could potentially go after Harris’ own assets including his house. Whilst this is an extreme example of what can go wrong, it shows the responsibilities of being appointed an Executor and the advantage that having a professional can have.

A Deed of Variation is an instrument by which, after a death, a beneficiary can divert their entitlement under a Will or Intestacy to somebody else. The effect of using a Deed of Variation rather than the person just gifting their legacy or entitlement to a third party is that there are no tax consequences for the original beneficiary, it is deemed as though the deceased made the gift. The terms of the Deed of Variation are ‘written back’ into the Will or alter the Intestacy Rules for Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax purposes.
